Advice on backpacking and good websites to check??

Would like to take a year off and go back backing with my boyfriend before we get married and have babies!Advice on backpacking and good websites to check??
A few things that have helped me:

Check the foreign office's website for information on where you're going, a lot of countries that are deemed perfectly safe have 'no-go' regions in them i.e. Thailand's south east border region.

Take as little foreign money with you as possible; a lot of countries will give you a better exchange rate once you're there. But be sure to check the laws on entering countries as some require you to bring a minimum amount of their national currency with you.

Don't take more than is necessary. I know it sounds obvious but so many people take a ridiculous amount of clothing and personal items with them. If you're going somewhere hot take sandals instead of socks and trainers/shoes, try to go to the airport without a coat, jumper etc. Remember, if you're backpacking you have to carry EVERYTHING you take with you. And you can always buy things abroad; a lot of backpacker destinations are so much cheaper than here.

Travel insurance: Another obvious thing that a lot of people ignore, especially backpackers. It costs very little and could save your life.

Entertainment: There will be times in your trip when you get bored. It may seem unlikely now but if you're on a tight budget or a flight's been delayed you'll want something to do. Books are a good idea, a lot of places have book exchanges so you don't have to take many with you. A personal favorite is juggling, it requires only 3 balls and is infinite in its possibilities. And once you get the basics it becomes addictive. (If you do take this up, be warned that some places, especially Australia, will confiscate your balls if they contain seeds, which a lot of them do.)

Don't book any accommodation in advance, you'll be ripped off it you book through travel agents, tour operators etc. and it's much more rewarding to find somewhere to stay yourself.

Shop around for flights. Some people prefer to buy them all in advance, some will buy as they go. If you do the former, check to see if the flights are transferable, just in case. If you do the latter, make sure the country you're going to doesn't require outbound flights to be confirmed as part of the visa requirements.

Hope that helps.Advice on backpacking and good websites to check??
